Pearls are a gemstone that differ from all other gemstones because they come from a living creature. Less than one in every 10,000 wild oysters contains a pearl. Thus “natural saltwater pearls” are considered to be one of the rarest jewels on the planet.

In the late 1800s, Kokichi Mikimoto was credited with creating the first cultured pearl or pearls grown in oyster beds-

a more sustainable way to obtain what was such a desirable gemstone.

Today cultured pearls are grown in freshwater rivers and lakes across China. Japanese Akoyo pearls are a variety of saltwater grown pearls. Tahitian pearls are another saltwater cultivated pearl of the French Polynesia known more as “black pearls”. South sea pearls are the largest of all pearls found in the waters of Australia and the Philippines.

According to legend, the pearl is believed to symbolize purity, clarity and loyalty.

We have a stunning new collection of freshwater pearl jewelry: earrings, necklaces, and bracelets made right here in the shop by Genevieve. (GenVie Designs) As well as some gorgeous pearl pendants made in Bali.
